Claude Cowork moves new Pro and Max tasks to the cloud

Anthropic is changing the execution environment for Claude Cowork on Pro and Max plans. Its current Help Center documentation says new Cowork tasks run in the cloud from October 6, 2026. The previous “Only on your computer” option is removed for new tasks on these plans, while tasks already started locally remain in their existing environment.

The change matters most for long-running and scheduled work. Anthropic now describes Cowork across desktop, web and mobile, with sessions and files tied to the Claude account. Scheduled tasks can use the same Cowork capabilities as regular tasks, including connected tools, skills and installed plugins.

Cloud execution is not automatically positive or negative. It can make tasks less dependent on a powered-on personal device and simplify switching between devices, but it also changes the technical execution context. For sensitive data, plan terms, organization policies, integrations and documented privacy and security conditions still matter.
