Claude Managed Agents: Dynamic multi-agent workflows enter beta

Anthropic documents dynamically generated workflows with phases, agent threads and workflow events in Claude Managed Agents.

Direct answer

On October 9, Anthropic documented dynamic workflows in beta for Claude Managed Agents. An agent can produce a program that runs multiple agents in phases; the platform executes workflow runs in the background and reports events. The capability is not automatically available in Claude chat, Cowork or every Claude model.

Anthropic’s Claude Platform release notes for October 9, 2026 document a new option in Claude Managed Agents. For large tasks, such as reviewing hundreds of documents, the primary agent can generate a workflow program. That program assigns work to multiple agents in named phases and combines what they return. The server executes the resulting “workflow run” in the background, which is different from treating every intermediate response as the final result.

The feature is in beta with the existing “managed-agents-2026-04-01” beta header. Developers must also enable workflows inside the agent’s multiagent configuration using type “multiagent_20261001” and workflows type “enabled”. These are product-specific API settings. The release note does not establish that the same behavior exists automatically in the Claude chat application, Cowork or all uses of Claude models.

According to the workflow-runs documentation, participating agents operate in separate session threads. The platform emits “workflow_run.*” events and phase updates on the session event stream. Workflows can consist of multiple stages and agents, while published operational limits cover simultaneous threads, open runs, total agent starts and run lifetime. These limits matter for observability, cost controls, retries and recovery, rather than implying unrestricted parallelism.

For AgentenCode, the release illustrates dynamic orchestration alongside supervisor-based control, parallel delegation and graph workflows. Dynamic task splitting may help with decomposable work, but also creates more state, trace and review obligations. Anthropic is documenting platform support—not an independently replicated improvement over a single-agent baseline. We therefore classify the feature as an opt-in beta for Managed Agents, without transferring it to unrelated Anthropic products or treating it as an automatically verified trust control.
